Ranked by how much the evidence says each thing moves.

The order

Ranked, and honest about the ranking

1

Guard the night

Sleep is the one thing here with a clean, large, dose‑responsive effect: the more the sleep improved, the more everything else did.

−0.63 on depression across 65 trials and 8,608 people, and the more the sleep improved the more the mind did. The authors' word is that this suggests sleep is causally related to it, and suggests is as far as they go.
2

Move your body

Walking or jogging is the best‑supported kind, and under twelve weeks works. This used to say it was the largest effect anybody has measured for anything. It is not, and we were wrong to say so.

−0.62 for walking or jogging in particular, across 1,210 people. Only one study in 218 met the low‑risk‑of‑bias bar, and in the four cleanest trials of an earlier review the effect vanished to −0.11 (p=0.45).
3

Tell one person one true thing

One true sentence, to somebody you can reach, this week.

Across 280 studies, talking it through beat simply adding contact. We also said in‑person beat doing it through a screen; that gap does not survive the paper's own sensitivity analysis, so we have withdrawn it. The certainty of the rest is rated low to very low.
4

Put the internet down

The internet on the phone, not the phone itself. Calls and texts stay. Two weeks is the tested dose. Most people who signed up for it could not do it.

Of 467 people randomised, 119 managed ten of the fourteen days. The gains were real and they belong to that quarter.
5

Write it down, unedited

Fifteen minutes about the thing you are avoiding. Do not make it good. Do not reread it.

The smallest effect on this page by some way, and the one we had the wrong citation against until somebody checked. It is Frattaroli’s meta-analysis of experimental disclosure.

And one for the next minute

Two inhales through the nose (a second short one on top of the first, to reinflate the lungs), then a long slow exhale through the mouth. Repeat for five minutes.

It is called cyclic sighing, and in a head-to-head trial it beat mindfulness meditation on mood, five minutes a day for a month. The exhale is the part that does the work.

Randomised, 111 people, Cell Reports Medicine.

What is under all five

Journaling is what every app in this category sells, and it is last here. The confidence in one to four is low across the board, so ranking them against each other is ranking noise. What does not wash out is the same thing in every one of them: the largest exercise effects were supervised or in a group, talking it through beat adding contact, and the internet result belongs to the quarter who had somebody expecting it of them. Guard the night, and do it with somebody.

None of the above, if it is tonight

Tell one person, put distance between yourself and the means even for one night, and ring somebody: 988 · 116 123 · findahelpline.com. You do not have to be certain to call.

And the one about AI

Most people are already doing it, and almost nobody was told how, or what goes wrong. The failures are documented and specific.
